7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you’re like most people, your rain gutters aren’t something you often think about. They need routine gutter cleaning, but besides that, their functionality is incredibly simple.

It’s not until your gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you understand how important they are for your home!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most homes in Longmont. They fade into the home’s exterior unless the homeowner has opted for copper or wood … materials that are definitely meant to stand out! Most home exteriors are crafted from durable yet lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The point of gutters is to create a path of minimal resistance for rain to get off your roof as fast as possible. When they’re in good condition, your gutters will lead runoff away from the home’s foundation and landscaping, will protect your home’s exterior from mildew and mold, the foundation and basement from leaking water, and the gutters themselves from wear and rust.

When they are damaged, it can lead to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your house and surrounding property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too easy to fix to be the cause of major home repairs! Keeping an eye on your gutters is easy and safe. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s a pretty good indication that your gutters have some type of damage.

As soon as you notice a possible gutter issue, you can decide if it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying by yourself or if it’s something you should trust a gutter company for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Standing water is a good sign that your gutters or downspouts are not directing the water runoff away from your home the way they should be. Pooling water can result in mold, weakening of your foundation, and creates the perfect habitat for pesky mosquitoes. And, it will make the areas surrounding your house constantly wet and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Either one of these is a sign of gutter damage, whether you see mold or mildew on the gutters or the exterior of your house. Mold and mildew indicate there is excessive moisture in that area – a possible problem with the gutters could be the cause. Remember that mildew and mold are more likely to grow on the north side of a house anyway, so if that’s where these substances are appearing, it may just be because that area gets very little direct sunlight. This is a time when the advice and expertise of a professional in Longmont would be helpful.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You will need to wait until it’s actually raining to discover this type of gutter issue. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that you have gutter damage. It could just be that the gutter is clogged with debris and should be cleaned. In either case, you want to have it checked ASAP.

Basement Leaks

Depending on the construction of your basement, the leaking could be caused by any number of things. The standing water problem we mentioned earlier could definitely result in a basement leak. Egress windows and cinder block walls will only block out so much water. That’s why it is necessary to keep your gutters in good condition!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Rain gutters pour directly onto the ground most of the time, and landscaping should be designed to work with this water flow to help it submerge into the ground. However, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will cause rainfall to overflow or pool where it isn’t supposed to. This rain water can destroy plants either by force or by overwatering. It will also displace flower bed building materials like mulch or rock.

Water Marks

Water marks are the first sign that there is a lot of moisture on a surface. Water marks are sometimes left behind even if pooling water has evaporated or dissipated. You will usually see water marks right under the rain gutters or directly behind the downspouts. This is a typically a sign that water is streaming down the outside of the gutters rather than staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The final sign of gutter damage is by far the easiest to spot. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked, they obviously have damage. After a storm, it’s a smart idea to walk around your house to assess any possible damage to the roof shingles, exterior, and gutters. These inspections are in addition to any routine home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are a few easy ways Longmont Gutters Unlimited recommends to help prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters out at least once a year. You can extend the amount of time between gutter repairs by keeping them cleaned out regularly. Like with anything else, the better you maintain your rain gutters, the fewer issues you’ll have with them.

The optimal time to clean out gutters is during the spring, but to be cautious, give them a good cleaning in the fall, too. Many homeowners clean their gutters on their own, but there are professional gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to deal with the mess or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of gutter damage can often be visible from the outside of the gutters. Just a quick inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – will reveal any of the problems we wrote about above.

We’d recommend that you complete an exterior home inspection after each season to ensure that your gutters are functioning the right way.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Taking care of a problem before it becomes too bad can save you a lot of time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can be replaced very affordably.

However, if you let the problem go on for too long, you might end up making repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire section of landscaping.
